Wait, What? “Revision” Can Secretly Be First-Time Learning

A student may label every session “revision”. But opening a chapter for the first time, attempting questions after instruction, and returning weeks later to prepare material for use again are different study situations. If the interface gives all three the same label, the student may bring the wrong resources, expect the wrong kind of progress and stop at the wrong point.

Quick Answer

Before beginning, mark the session’s dominant study mode: LEARN, PRACTISE or REVISE. The label is not a theory of cognition. It is an interface instruction that changes what the student needs to see and do.

Owned Interface Job

This page owns the learner-facing transition between three common study situations. MindOS owns the mechanisms of retrieval, practice, spacing, feedback and transfer. This Interface manual only makes the current job visible enough for the student to operate.

Mode 1: LEARN

The material is substantially new or not yet sufficiently mapped for the assigned task. The interface should expose the authoritative source, the section boundary, unfamiliar terms/questions and a place to record what remains unclear. A sensible finish condition might be: “I have reached the end of the defined section, marked uncertainties and can identify what must be practised next.”

Mode 2: PRACTISE

The student has encountered the material and now needs to operate it. The interface should expose the task set, permitted support, checking rule and correction record. A finish condition might be: “I attempted the planned set under the stated support conditions, checked it, and marked unresolved items.” Whether the practice was well designed is a MindOS question; whether the student can see how to run the session is the Interface question.

Mode 3: REVISE

The student is returning to previously encountered material. The interface should expose the revision scope, what prior record exists, which resources may remain closed initially, and what must be left ready for the next return. “Read all my notes again” is not automatically a useful revision interface because it does not say what the student is trying to make available or check.

Mixed Sessions

Real study is not always neatly separated. A practice attempt can reveal that part of the topic must be learned again. Revision can uncover a missing prerequisite. When the job changes materially, change the mode label rather than pretending the original plan is still running. Record why the switch occurred.

Discrimination Check

Ask: “If I removed the session title, could I tell from the visible materials and first action whether this student is learning, practising or revising?” If not, the interface may be underspecified. A revision session with every answer open, for example, may look operationally identical to rereading.

How Do We Know?

Self-regulated learning research supports learners planning, monitoring and adapting their activity. Research also distinguishes different learning activities and practice conditions. This three-mode card is not presented as a universal scientific taxonomy; it is a student-facing simplification designed to stop materially different study jobs from becoming one vague command: “study”.

Finish, Record, Resume

Record the mode completed, the exact stopping point, unresolved items and the next likely mode. “Practise Q6–10 next” is a much stronger restart state than “continue Chemistry”.

For Parents and Tutors

Ask “Are you learning this, practising it, or revising it?” before recommending a resource. A child who is genuinely learning something new may need access to explanation; a child running a planned practice session may need the answer source kept closed until the agreed check point. Keep the question operational rather than judgemental.
