Bolt 01 — Your Score Is Not You

What exactly became 58%?

A student opens a Mathematics paper.

58%.

There it is. Red ink. A number. Perhaps a grade beside it.

And within a few seconds something strange can happen.

The paper says 58%.

The child thinks: I am bad at Mathematics.

The parent thinks: She is weak at Mathematics.

The teacher may think: She needs easier work.

But wait.

What exactly became 58%?

The child? Her mathematical ability? Everything she knows? Everything she could learn? Her ability to solve an unfamiliar problem? Her performance that morning? Or simply the answers she produced to a particular collection of questions, under particular conditions, which were then marked according to a particular marking scheme?

Those are not the same thing.

And understanding that difference may be one of the most important things we can teach a child about education.

A score is useful precisely because it measures something

This is not an argument against examinations.

A good examination is useful.

If I want to know whether a student can manipulate algebraic expressions, solve simultaneous equations or reason through a scientific problem, I need evidence.

A test can give me some of that evidence.

The mistake begins when we quietly change:

“This student obtained 58% on this assessment.”

into:

“This student possesses 58% ability.”

Educational measurement does not support such a casual jump. Modern validity theory asks whether evidence supports the particular interpretation and use being made from a score. The National Council on Measurement in Education describes validity in terms of evidence supporting test-score interpretations and uses for particular purposes.

Reliability has limits too. An ETS introduction to test reliability explains that an observed score contains measurement error, while the theoretical “true score” cannot simply be observed directly from one test sitting.

That means a mark is evidence.

It is not the whole person.

Usain Bolt ran 9.58 seconds

Usain Bolt ran the 100 metres in 9.58 seconds in Berlin on 16 August 2009, a world record ratified by World Athletics and still listed as the world record.

That number is astonishingly precise.

9.58.

But we would never say:

Usain Bolt is 9.58.

The number describes a performance. Researchers can look beneath the finishing time at different phases and kinematic components of sprinting. The clock is extremely useful, but it measures the race. It does not contain Usain Bolt.

That distinction seems obvious in sport.

It becomes strangely easy to forget in school.

A 58% can contain very different children

Imagine four students all receiving 58% on the same Mathematics examination.

  • The first understands almost everything but repeatedly makes algebraic execution errors.
  • The second calculates accurately but cannot recognise which method an unfamiliar problem requires.
  • The third understands the material but completes only three quarters of the paper.
  • The fourth has genuine conceptual gaps in several topics.

Same 58%. Completely different educational problem.

If we respond to all four students with, “You got 58%. Do more practice,” we have hardly diagnosed anything.

The score has told us where to look.

It has not told us everything we need to find there.

This changes what a teacher should do with marks

The purpose of marking should not end with assigning the number. The interesting work starts afterwards.

A good teacher can ask:

  • Where did the marks disappear?
  • Were they lost because the student did not know something?
  • Because the student knew it but could not retrieve it?
  • Because the method was understood but execution failed?
  • Because an unfamiliar presentation prevented transfer?
  • Because time ran out?
  • Because several small inaccuracies accumulated?
  • Because the student misunderstood what the question required?

These are different causes. Different causes require different repairs.

A mark says: Something happened.

Good teaching asks: Why?

The child has to learn this distinction too

Children build identities very quickly.

“I scored badly” becomes “I am bad.”

“I found this difficult” becomes “I can’t do this.”

These statements erase time, context and mechanisms. Most importantly, they erase the possibility of change.

A much more accurate statement is:

This is what happened when I attempted this task at this point in my development.

That does not make poor performance disappear. It makes poor performance usable.

There is an enormous difference between denying evidence and interpreting evidence properly.

We want neither “the test means nothing” nor “the test defines me.”

We want: The test has given me information. Now let’s understand it.

Why this matters for education

Eventually, we want the child to look at 58% and not collapse into it.

We want them to become curious.

  • What did I know?
  • What didn’t I know?
  • What went wrong?
  • What did I unexpectedly do well?
  • Was this result typical?
  • What should I change before the next attempt?
  • What additional evidence do I need?

That is the beginning of a very different relationship with assessment.

A score stops being a verdict.

It becomes a measurement inside a learning process.

Your score matters. But your score is not you.

It is one reading from a much larger system. The educational job is to learn how to read it.
