A personal best is a receipt from the past
An athlete runs the fastest race of their life.
The number becomes a personal best.
It matters.
It proves that under those conditions, at that point in time, the athlete produced that performance.
But the personal best is not a permanent promise that the body will reproduce the same output tomorrow morning.
The athlete who ran 10.00 seconds yesterday does not become a permanently available 10.00-second machine.
The body has a state.
And state changes.
Performance varies within the same athlete
Sports science treats this variability as real rather than inconvenient noise that should simply be ignored.
A systematic review of elite competitive performance found measurable within-athlete variability even among the best performers. Sprint and endurance events can be relatively stable compared with many other sports, yet performance still changes from competition to competition.
That means one important distinction is:
What can this athlete do across time? is not exactly the same question as What can this athlete produce today?
Time of day can change performance
Even within one day, performance can shift.
A systematic review of diurnal variation in athletic performance identified body temperature, chronotype, oxygen kinetics and other factors associated with changes across the day.
That does not mean every athlete performs best at the same hour.
It means the same person can produce different outputs under different temporal conditions.
So when a performance changes, we should not immediately conclude that the athlete’s deeper capability has fundamentally changed.
Sleep can change what capability looks like today
Sleep is another obvious example.
A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis found that acute sleep deprivation impaired overall athletic performance, with negative effects across several domains including speed, skill control, endurance and explosive performance.
This does not mean a sleep-deprived athlete has permanently lost their ability.
It means the current state can reduce how much of that ability is expressed.
That distinction is essential for calibration.
Fatigue changes the reading too
Physical and mental fatigue can alter performance.
Recent systematic reviews report that physical fatigue generally impairs physical output, while mental fatigue can affect sport-specific reaction time, technical execution and decision-making depending on the task and protocol.
Again, the key idea is not that every bad performance can be excused as fatigue.
It is that performance should be interpreted with enough context to distinguish a temporary state effect from a durable change in capability.
Now move the same idea into school
A student usually scores around 80%.
One day they score 58%.
What changed?
Maybe the underlying capability really has a weakness that the earlier tests did not expose.
Maybe the paper sampled a different set of skills.
Maybe the learner slept badly.
Maybe test anxiety disrupted performance.
Maybe time pressure affected retrieval or execution.
One result cannot tell us which explanation is correct by itself.
We need the wider pattern.
Education often mistakes a state for an identity
A student is exhausted and performs badly.
They say:
“I’m terrible at this.”
That is a huge inferential jump.
The performance may be real.
The state may be real.
But neither automatically defines the whole capability.
The same error can happen in the opposite direction.
One unusually good paper does not prove every underlying weakness has disappeared.
A lucky peak is still a peak, not necessarily the new baseline.
A personal best should expand possibility, not erase variability
If a learner performs brilliantly once, that performance matters.
It tells us the system can reach that level under at least some conditions.
Now the next questions become:
- Can the performance be repeated?
- Under which conditions?
- How much does it vary?
- What makes the stronger state more likely?
- What causes performance to fall away?
That is a much better use of a peak result than simply relabelling the learner.
Why this matters for parents and teachers
When a result surprises us, ask first whether we are looking at a stable pattern or a state-dependent event.
Do not excuse every poor result.
Do not over-celebrate every exceptional result either.
Collect enough evidence to know what repeats.
Yesterday’s best tells us something important about possibility. Today’s performance tells us something important about the current state. Calibration requires knowing the difference.
