Bolt 04 — Who Knows You Better: You or Your Teacher?

The uncomfortable answer may be: neither of you, completely

Suppose a student walks out of an examination and says:

“That went really well. I think I got about 85.”

The teacher marks it.

54%.

Who is right?

At first the answer seems obvious. The teacher has the paper. 54 wins.

But there are actually two separate questions.

For the score on this particular examination, the marked paper gives us very strong evidence.

But what about the student’s broader capability?

What about why the student predicted 85?

And what if the opposite happens?

The student says, “That was terrible. Maybe 45.”

Result: 82%.

Now something else is wrong.

The paper is not necessarily wrong.

The student’s internal estimate may be wrong.

This is the territory of calibration.

Calibration is already a research concept

Educational psychology uses calibration to describe the fit between someone’s judgement of their performance and their actual performance.

Students can overestimate themselves.

They can underestimate themselves.

A major review of student self-assessment notes that calibration research often asks learners to predict or judge the correctness of their own performance. Crucially, the same review cautions against assuming that an external rater is automatically infallible and describes evidence that self-assessment can improve when it is taught, supported and practised.

That is exactly the problem we are looking for.

There are different calibrators.

Sport makes this easy to see

An athlete has access to information that the coach does not.

The athlete can feel effort, fatigue, tightness, breathing, rhythm, confidence, pain and whether a movement feels unusually difficult.

Sports science does not simply throw this subjective information away. Ratings of perceived exertion are widely used as one way of monitoring internal training load.

But the coach sees things the athlete cannot.

Position. Technique. Timing. Movement from another angle. Patterns across sessions.

And instruments can see things neither may perceive accurately.

Velocity. Distance. Split times. Video. Force. Heart-rate response.

That gives elite sport a beautiful structure:

Athlete + coach + instrument + repeated performance

No single observer gets everything.

Bolt and Mills demonstrate this particularly well

Coach Glen Mills described using slow-motion video of Bolt’s workouts to expose mechanical details and body positions that could then be discussed and trained. The athlete experiences the movement from inside; the coach and video provide another view.

So Bolt knew things about Bolt.

Mills knew things about Bolt.

The video knew something.

The stopwatch knew something.

The race produced another receipt.

That is much more sophisticated than “believe in yourself.”

And it is also more sophisticated than “always listen to your coach.”

Allow every source of evidence to correct the others.

Coaches and athletes actually disagree sometimes

Sports science has studied this directly.

A systematic review and meta-analysis found moderate-to-high associations between coaches’ intended or observed exertion and athletes’ own perceived exertion, but the relationship was not perfect. Another meta-analysis found that overall athlete and coach perceptions of training load could agree reasonably well while still diverging under particular conditions.

That makes intuitive sense.

The athlete possesses privileged internal information.

The coach possesses privileged external information.

Neither has magical access to the entire system.

Education is similar.

The teacher can see what the learner cannot

A child may say:

“I just made careless mistakes.”

The teacher examines five months of papers and sees the same algebraic misconception repeatedly.

That probably is not random carelessness.

The teacher has information the child lacks.

Or the child says:

“I’m terrible at problem sums.”

The teacher notices that the child actually solves difficult problems well but takes too long translating language into mathematical representation.

The child’s self-description is too crude.

Again, the external observer adds resolution.

But the learner can know what the teacher cannot

A teacher sees a blank answer.

Was it blank because the child knew nothing?

Maybe.

But perhaps the child knew what to do and froze under time pressure. Perhaps they misread one word. Perhaps they spent twelve minutes pursuing a plausible but incorrect approach. Perhaps they realised the correct method thirty seconds after the paper ended.

Those distinctions matter for instruction.

Sometimes the only way to discover them is to ask.

The learner is not merely the object being measured.

The learner is also a sensor.

This suggests a different classroom habit

Before returning a marked paper, occasionally ask:

What score do you think you received?

Then:

Why?

Not merely “guess your grade.”

Ask: What evidence are you using?

A student might say:

“Around 70. I think my algebra was strong, but I couldn’t finish the last two questions.”

Now return the paper.

Suppose it is 72.

The 72 matters.

But something else has happened.

The learner’s internal judgement was reasonably close to the observed result, and their explanation may reveal whether they understood what drove the performance.

Try this repeatedly.

Prediction → performance → feedback → update → prediction again.

Now assessment is doing two jobs.

It measures learning.

And it slowly teaches the learner how to measure their own learning.

Why this matters so much for education

The long-term purpose of education cannot be to create adults who require a teacher standing beside them forever saying:

  • Yes, you understand this.
  • No, you don’t.
  • You are ready.
  • You aren’t ready.

Eventually they have to make those judgements themselves.

What don’t I understand? How ready am I? Should I attempt something harder? Do I need help? Is my answer trustworthy? Have I practised enough? Can I perform this under pressure?

Those are self-regulatory decisions.

That sounds remarkably like what a good coach eventually does.

Not replace the athlete’s judgement.

Improve it.

So who knows you better?

Sometimes you.

Sometimes your teacher.

Sometimes the examination reveals something both of you missed.

Sometimes another attempt changes the picture again.

The goal is therefore not to decide permanently: student or teacher?

It is to build a system in which the student can correct the teacher, the teacher can correct the student, the evidence can correct both, and new evidence can correct yesterday’s conclusion.

That is calibration.

Education should not simply help a learner become more capable. It should help them become increasingly accurate at knowing what they can do.

The stronger that becomes, the less the learner needs someone else to tell them who they are.
