The coach can see you. The coach cannot feel you.
A coach can stand beside the track and see posture, rhythm, timing and mechanics.
A stopwatch can measure the time.
A camera can replay the movement.
A heart-rate monitor can record physiological response.
But none of them can directly feel what the athlete feels from inside.
The athlete can feel tightness, heaviness, breathlessness, pain, rhythm, uncertainty, ease, effort and whether something feels different from normal.
That information is subjective.
Subjective does not mean useless.
Sport science already treats the inside and outside as different measurements
Sports science often separates external load from internal load.
External load describes what the athlete did: distance covered, acceleration, repetitions, speed, mechanical work and other observable demands.
Internal load describes how the athlete responded to that demand. It can include physiological measures such as heart rate and subjective measures such as ratings of perceived exertion.
A 2023 systematic review of adolescent-athlete monitoring found that session ratings of perceived exertion were among the most commonly used internal-load tools, while also warning that single measures rarely explain the whole relationship between training, adaptation, injury and illness.
That is exactly the point.
The athlete’s report is not the whole truth. But removing the athlete’s report can also remove part of the truth.
Two identical sessions may not be identical inside two athletes
Imagine two athletes complete exactly the same running session.
Same distance.
Same pace.
Same repetitions.
From the outside, the training load looks equal.
But Athlete A reports that the session felt comfortable.
Athlete B reports unusually high effort and heavy legs.
Maybe Athlete B slept badly.
Maybe recovery is incomplete.
Maybe illness is beginning.
Maybe the rating is noisy.
The response does not tell us automatically which explanation is correct.
But the disagreement tells us where to look.
Athlete and coach ratings can agree — and still disagree in useful ways
A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing athletes’ perceived training load with what coaches planned or observed found overall agreement was often reasonable.
But agreement was not perfect. Differences appeared under some conditions, including easier sessions.
This is important because disagreement is not automatically evidence that one side is foolish.
The coach is estimating the athlete from outside.
The athlete is estimating the experience from inside.
Different positions can produce different readings.
Now move from the track into a classroom
A teacher sees a student complete a question correctly.
From outside, the performance looks secure.
The student says:
“I got it right, but I was guessing between two methods.”
That matters.
Another student gets a question wrong and says:
“I knew the method, but I changed my answer because I thought the first one looked too easy.”
Again, that matters.
The marked response is an external receipt.
The learner’s report can reveal something about certainty, effort, retrieval, confusion or decision-making that is not visible in the final answer.
The learner is not merely the object being measured
This is one of the most useful corrections education can make.
We often treat the student as something the school measures.
The teacher observes.
The examination scores.
The report card records.
But the learner is also generating information.
They can report whether something felt fluent or fragile.
They can say whether an answer came from understanding or guessing.
They can notice whether performance deteriorated under time pressure.
They can sometimes detect a change before the external score makes it obvious.
That makes the learner a participant in measurement, not merely its target.
But internal feeling must still be tested
There is an opposite danger.
Because subjective experience contains useful information, we might begin treating feelings as unquestionable truth.
That would be another calibration failure.
An athlete can feel fast and run slowly.
A student can feel confident and be wrong.
A learner can feel completely lost and still perform very well.
The solution is not to privilege inside information over outside information.
The solution is to compare them.
What did it feel like? What actually happened? Do those readings agree?
A useful classroom habit
After a demanding task, ask more than:
“Did you get it right?”
Ask:
- How difficult did that feel?
- Which part felt most uncertain?
- Did you know the method immediately or discover it as you worked?
- Would you trust this answer without checking?
- Did the time pressure change what you could do?
- Does your feeling agree with the result?
Across repeated tasks, the student begins learning something very important.
Which internal sensations are reliable cues?
Which are misleading?
That is another layer of calibration.
Why this matters for education
The teacher cannot accompany the learner forever.
Eventually the learner has to decide:
- Do I really understand this?
- Was that answer secure or lucky?
- Am I tired or simply avoiding difficulty?
- Do I need help?
- Can I attempt something harder?
- Is this discomfort normal challenge or evidence that a prerequisite is missing?
Those decisions depend partly on information only the learner can access directly.
Education should therefore teach learners to read their internal signals more accurately, not to ignore them and not to worship them.
The coach can see things you cannot. You can feel things the coach cannot. Better calibration begins when both forms of evidence are allowed into the same conversation.
