Wait, What? A Student Can Receive Excellent Feedback for Years and Still Remain Dependent on Someone Else to Interpret Performance

A mark arrives. The teacher explains what it means. The student waits.

That can be appropriate early in learning. But if the same pattern remains unchanged for years, the educational system may be producing accurate external judgement without producing better learner calibration.

Bolt’s job is not to own self-regulated learning. Its job is to measure whether external assessment and feedback are gradually producing a learner who can make increasingly accurate predictions, interpret evidence more independently, and still remain correctable by teachers, tests and later performance.

External Marks Are Receipts, Not the Whole Learning System

A score can do several useful jobs:

  • record performance under stated conditions;
  • show whether a criterion was met;
  • support comparison when tasks and scales are genuinely comparable;
  • challenge a learner’s inaccurate self-estimate;
  • give teachers evidence for the next performance cycle.

But a mark does not automatically tell the learner why the result occurred, whether the same pattern will return, or what the learner can independently detect before the next mark arrives.

The Transfer We Are Measuring

Imagine the same learner across several stages:

  • Stage 1: the teacher explains the result completely.
  • Stage 2: the learner predicts the likely result before seeing it.
  • Stage 3: the learner identifies likely strong and weak sections before marking.
  • Stage 4: the learner’s prediction and diagnosis increasingly match the later evidence.
  • Stage 5: the learner knows when their own judgement is uncertain and asks for another observer or stronger test.

The progression is not “teacher disappears.” It is “the learner can carry more of the calibration work while remaining answerable to external evidence.”

Observable Evidence That Calibration Is Becoming More Independent

  • Prediction error decreases across comparable tasks.
  • The learner can identify which part of a performance is uncertain rather than giving a global “good/bad” judgement.
  • The learner distinguishes supported success from independent success.
  • The learner updates when a teacher or assessment provides stronger contradictory evidence.
  • The learner can use criteria before the teacher supplies the final judgement.
  • The learner can identify when more evidence is needed instead of pretending certainty.
  • The learner’s self-estimate changes when capability changes, rather than remaining stuck on an old label.

Competing Explanations for Apparent Independence

A student who can predict a mark accurately once may not yet be well calibrated. The apparent success could reflect:

  • real improvement in self-calibration;
  • knowledge of the teacher’s marking habits;
  • a very familiar task;
  • a narrow score range that makes guessing easier;
  • recent feedback still supplying the answer indirectly;
  • chance;
  • accurate score prediction but poor diagnosis of why the score occurred.

Bolt therefore tests the pattern repeatedly and changes conditions where appropriate.

School–Teacher–Student Calibration

School

The school should ask whether its assessment system merely generates grades or also creates usable evidence for better judgement. If students only encounter judgement after submission, the system may miss opportunities to compare prediction with outcome and to measure calibration growth.

Teacher or Coach

The teacher should make criteria visible enough that the learner can eventually use them, while still retaining the teacher’s role as an independent observer. Teacher judgement is valuable evidence, not a truth that must remain permanently external to the learner.

Student

The student should be encouraged to make bounded predictions before outcomes arrive: expected score range, likely weak section, level of certainty and the evidence behind the prediction. The aim is a correctable model, not a performance of confidence.

Worked Example: From “What Did I Get?” to “What Will the Paper Show?”

A student usually waits for the teacher to return a Mathematics paper. Before the next paper is marked, the teacher asks for a prediction:

“I expect about 70%. Routine algebra felt secure. I think I lost marks on two unfamiliar word problems and I probably ran out of time on the final page.”

The paper returns at 72%. The unfamiliar problems are indeed weak, but the learner did not run out of time; the final-page errors came from misreading a condition.

The important result is not “the student predicted the mark almost perfectly.” The higher-resolution receipt is:

  • score estimate was close;
  • one mechanism estimate was accurate;
  • one mechanism estimate was wrong;
  • the next prediction can become more specific.

That is calibration growth if the pattern improves over repeated cycles.

How Do We Know?

Research on metacognition and self-regulated learning treats monitoring and control as related but distinct processes. The learner forms judgements about knowledge or performance, then may use those judgements to regulate action. This makes calibration educationally important without making it the whole of self-regulated learning.

The 2023 meta-analysis Effects of Regulated Learning Scaffolding on Regulation Strategies and Academic Performance found a moderate overall effect across 46 studies, with substantial contextual variation. That supports careful scaffolding while warning against assuming a single universal route from external support to independent regulation.

The 2025 study Who Regulates? Effects of Scaffolding in System- and Self-Regulated Learning found benefits of scaffolding in its sample but no simple main effect for the agency of regulation. Bolt uses that as a boundary reminder: independence must be measured in the actual performance job, not assumed from ideology.

The Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing emphasise evidence for score interpretation and use. External marks remain valuable calibration receipts only when the conditions, construct and intended inference are sufficiently clear.

Evidence Boundary

This page does not claim that students should mark all their own work, that external assessment should disappear, or that self-regulated learning can be reduced to predicting grades. It also does not claim that accurate self-assessment automatically improves subject capability.

The narrower claim is that external assessment can be used to improve calibration when prediction, performance and update are compared repeatedly—and that this transfer can itself be measured.

Common Misconceptions

  • “Independent learners do not need teachers.” False. Independent calibration still benefits from external evidence.
  • “Self-regulation is just self-marking.” Far too narrow.
  • “A close score prediction proves strong self-knowledge.” Not without mechanism and repeated evidence.
  • “External marks create dependency.” They can also be useful calibration receipts; the design matters.
  • “Confidence should rise every cycle.” Sometimes better calibration means confidence falls because uncertainty becomes visible.

What Should Change Next?

Before the next significant assessment result is revealed, ask for a bounded prediction and the evidence behind it. After the result, compare prediction, mechanism estimate and actual performance. Then update only as far as the evidence warrants.
