Bolt 28 — From External Marks to Self-Regulated Learning

At first, somebody else tells you how you did

A child completes a piece of work.

The teacher marks it.

The child waits.

Then the answer arrives from outside.

Good effort. Needs more detail.

This is normal.

Beginners need external information.

The problem begins when education never moves beyond this structure.

The student performs.

The teacher judges.

The student waits to be told what the performance means.

Again.

And again.

For years.

The deeper educational goal is not fewer marks. It is less dependence on marks for self-direction.

Assessment has an important job.

It gives evidence.

It reveals gaps.

It helps teachers make decisions.

It can show whether learning survives without support.

Bolt has never argued that scores should disappear.

The stronger question is:

What should the learner gradually become able to do before the external score arrives?

Predict.

Monitor.

Notice uncertainty.

Locate errors.

Judge readiness.

Choose the next useful action.

Those are the beginnings of self-regulated learning.

Self-regulated learning is a cycle, not a personality type

Research on self-regulated learning describes learners as actively planning, monitoring, regulating and reflecting on their learning.

A 2026 systematic review of health-professions education found that strategic approaches, effective behavioural regulation and metacognitive monitoring were among the characteristics most consistently associated with stronger academic outcomes across the reviewed studies.

A 2023 meta-analysis covering 46 studies found that regulated-learning scaffolds had a moderate positive overall effect, with results depending on scaffold type, context and outcome.

These findings do not prove that self-regulation alone causes achievement.

They do show why education treats regulation as something that can be supported and developed rather than merely a fixed trait some students possess.

The external mark can become a calibration receipt

Suppose a student predicts 75% before a paper is returned.

They explain:

“My algebra should be strong. I think I lost marks on the unfamiliar word problems, and I did not finish the final question.”

The paper returns at 73%.

Now the mark has done more than rank the performance.

It has tested the learner’s internal diagnosis.

Next time, the learner can predict again.

Across repeated cycles, the external mark can help train the internal monitor.

The mark is no longer only “What did I get?” It becomes “How accurately did I understand what was happening while I was doing it?”

Feedback should progressively transfer the work of seeing

Early in learning, the teacher may need to say:

“Your method is wrong here.”

Later:

“There is a problem in this section. Can you locate it?”

Later still:

“Before I mark this, which part do you trust least?”

Eventually:

“I found the problem before submitting.”

The teacher has not become less valuable.

The learner has become more capable of carrying part of the teacher’s monitoring function independently.

The same transfer should happen with study decisions

At first the teacher may decide:

  • what the learner should practise;
  • how difficult the work should be;
  • when to review;
  • when to stop;
  • when to ask for help;
  • which weakness deserves priority.

But adult learning cannot operate like that forever.

The learner eventually needs to make these decisions themselves.

That requires a sufficiently accurate state estimate.

If I think I know something that I do not know, I may stop too early.

If I think I cannot do something I can already do, I may waste time or avoid the next challenge.

Self-regulation therefore depends partly on calibration.

But self-regulation is larger than calibration

This boundary matters.

Knowing your current state does not tell you everything about what to do next.

You also need:

  • a goal;
  • criteria for success;
  • strategies;
  • time and resources;
  • motivation;
  • a way to act;
  • a way to observe the return.

Self-regulated learning uses that information inside a larger action cycle.

Keeping those jobs separate prevents us from pretending self-knowledge alone solves learning.

The teacher becomes a calibrator of the learner’s calibration

As independence grows, teaching becomes more interesting.

The teacher no longer needs to supply every diagnosis.

The learner brings one.

“I think the main problem is retrieval rather than understanding. I can explain the concept with notes, but after two days I cannot reconstruct it unaided.”

Now the teacher can ask:

“What evidence would distinguish retrieval failure from a weaker underlying representation?”

The teacher is no longer merely diagnosing the subject problem.

They are helping improve the learner’s diagnostic system.

This is much closer to high-level coaching.

External assessment still matters at the end

There is an important safeguard against romanticising independence.

A student can become extremely articulate about their own learning and still be wrong.

Self-regulation must remain connected to external receipts.

Independent retrieval.

Unfamiliar tasks.

Examinations.

Teacher observation.

Real-world performance.

The learner becomes more self-regulating not by escaping measurement, but by participating intelligently in it.

A developmental sequence

We can imagine the transition like this.

  • Stage 1 — External judgement: “The teacher tells me how I did.”
  • Stage 2 — Shared judgement: “I predict; the teacher and score help me compare.”
  • Stage 3 — Guided diagnosis: “I identify the likely mechanism; the teacher tests my diagnosis.”
  • Stage 4 — Independent monitoring: “I notice patterns, uncertainty and errors while learning.”
  • Stage 5 — Self-regulated action: “I use that monitoring to choose practice, difficulty, help and next steps.”
  • Stage 6 — External recalibration when needed: “I know when another observer or stronger test is necessary.”

This is not a rigid age sequence.

Learners can move backward and forward depending on domain, novelty and difficulty.

But the direction is useful.

Why this matters for education

A school system can produce students who become very good at receiving judgement.

Wait for the grade.

Wait for the correction.

Wait for somebody to decide whether the work is good enough.

But adulthood contains many situations where nobody gives the mark first.

You have to decide whether you know enough.

Whether your work is ready.

Whether you need help.

Whether the evidence is sufficient.

Whether yesterday’s model of yourself is still accurate today.

The final purpose of external assessment should not be to make the learner permanently dependent on external judgement. It should help build a learner who can increasingly judge, regulate and improve performance while remaining correctable by evidence.

That is the movement from marks to self-regulated learning.

And it may be one of the most important movements education can make.
