Knowing what you can do in practice is not the same as knowing what you can do under pressure
A student can solve difficult Mathematics questions at home.
Then the examination begins.
The clock is visible.
The room is silent.
The consequences feel larger.
A method that was easy yesterday suddenly feels uncertain.
The student thinks:
“Maybe I never understood this properly.”
Perhaps.
But perhaps something else has happened.
The capability is being expressed through pressure.
And pressure changes the system.
Pressure can help or hurt performance
Sports science does not treat pressure as one simple thing.
A 2026 position statement from Exercise and Sports Science Australia synthesised research on performance under pressure and emphasised that pressure can have both facilitative and debilitative effects.
Some athletes become sharper.
Others become overloaded.
The same athlete may respond differently depending on preparation, meaning, experience, state and task.
That is already a warning against a crude educational label such as:
“She is bad under pressure.”
We need to ask what kind of pressure, under which conditions, and what part of performance changes.
Pressure can alter mental workload
Recent experimental work in basketball found that higher environmental pressure increased anxiety and mental workload and reduced shooting performance.
Participants with stronger inhibitory control tended to maintain performance better under demanding conditions.
The exact mechanism will differ across sports and learners, but the broader lesson is useful.
Pressure can consume part of the system that was previously available for performing the task.
A school examination can create a similar problem.
Working memory that was available for reasoning during practice may now be partly occupied by monitoring the clock, worrying about consequences, checking repeatedly or suppressing intrusive thoughts.
The final score is still real.
But the mechanism producing it may differ from the mechanism operating in calm practice.
Choking is not the same as lacking skill
“Choking under pressure” generally refers to a drop in performance when stakes or evaluative pressure rise despite sufficient underlying skill to perform better.
Sport psychology has investigated this for decades.
A 2026 meta-analysis of 21 intervention studies found that approaches such as pre-performance routines, mindfulness, quiet-eye training, self-talk and related methods could improve several forms of sport-specific performance under pressure.
The important educational implication is not that every student needs a sports-psychology routine.
It is that pressure performance can itself be trained and measured.
If pressure changes the output, then readiness should eventually be tested under conditions that resemble the performance environment.
Practice can be calibrated to pressure too
One experiment on early motor learning found that practising a skill under mild anxiety helped participants avoid later performance deterioration when exposed to higher pressure.
That result should not be turned into a universal rule that every learner should be made anxious during study.
But it does support a broader idea:
If the final environment contains pressure, some preparation should test whether the skill survives pressure.
A learner who performs beautifully with unlimited time and collapses when given a realistic examination limit has discovered something important.
Not necessarily “I do not know the subject.”
More precisely:
“My current capability is not yet robust under this level of time and evaluative pressure.”
That is a trainable statement.
Pressure can distort the self-estimate as well as the performance
This is where Bolt becomes more interesting.
Pressure does not only affect what people do.
It can affect how they interpret what they are doing.
A student feels anxious and concludes:
“I am failing.”
But the answers may still be mostly correct.
Another student feels energised and concludes:
“I am flying.”
Yet the work may contain unnoticed errors.
The learner therefore needs to calibrate not only performance, but the meaning of internal pressure signals.
Does a racing heart reliably predict poor performance for me?
Does feeling calm reliably predict readiness?
Which sensations are useful cues and which are misleading?
Only repeated receipts can answer those questions.
Calibration under pressure needs two baselines
For important performance, it can be useful to distinguish:
- Calm baseline: what can I do under low-pressure conditions?
- Pressure baseline: what can I reliably express when time, evaluation or consequence rises?
If the two are close, the capability is robust across conditions.
If they are far apart, the gap itself becomes a training target.
This prevents a common educational mistake.
We do not mistake excellent untimed practice for examination readiness.
And we do not mistake one pressure collapse for proof that the underlying knowledge never existed.
A practical pressure-calibration loop
Before a timed task:
- Predict the likely score or completion rate.
- Predict which part of the task will become vulnerable under pressure.
- Rate confidence in that prediction.
During:
- Notice where attention begins to fragment.
- Notice whether checking becomes excessive.
- Notice whether time perception becomes distorted.
- Notice whether difficulty is causing useful concentration or unproductive panic.
After:
- Compare calm and pressured performance.
- Compare predicted and actual failure points.
- Separate content error from pressure-induced execution error.
- Adjust the next practice condition.
Now pressure stops being a vague emotional label.
It becomes part of the performance model.
Why this matters for parents and teachers
When a child performs poorly under pressure, avoid two extremes.
Extreme one:
“The exam proves you never knew it.”
Extreme two:
“It was only stress, so the result means nothing.”
The stronger response is:
“The result tells us what happened under pressure. Now let us find out which part belongs to underlying skill and which part belongs to the pressure state.”
That keeps both the score and the learner in view.
Why this matters for education
Real performance often happens under conditions that are not calm.
Examinations.
Interviews.
Presentations.
Competitions.
Deadlines.
If education only measures what a student can do while comfortable and fully supported, it may overestimate readiness.
If education interprets every pressure failure as a pure measure of underlying ability, it may underestimate capability.
Calibration under pressure means learning the difference between what you know, what pressure changes, and how reliably you can still express what you know when the conditions become difficult.
That is a more demanding form of self-knowledge.
It is also much closer to real performance.
