Wait, What? A Prediction About a Student Can Help Create the Evidence That Later Seems to Confirm the Prediction
A teacher expects one student to succeed and another to struggle. Months later, the first student performs better. It is tempting to conclude that the teacher simply saw the future accurately.
Sometimes that may be partly true. Teachers often have real information about prior performance, classroom participation and task history. But expectations can also influence how teachers interact with students, which opportunities they offer, how they interpret errors and how students come to participate. The later performance can therefore be both predicted by the judgement and partly shaped by the conditions that followed it.

Suppose a teacher predicts that a learner will struggle with algebra. After making that judgement, the teacher gives the learner fewer challenging questions, intervenes earlier, calls on the learner less often and accepts shorter explanations. At the end of the term, the learner performs weakly on unfamiliar algebra problems.
The original prediction may have contained accurate information. But the later result cannot be interpreted as if nothing happened between prediction and outcome. The teacher’s judgement was embedded inside the learning environment.

School
Schools should be cautious when prediction systems, placement decisions or teacher judgements alter access to instruction and are then evaluated using outcomes produced under those altered conditions. The system can create a feedback loop that makes its original classification look more certain than it was.
Teacher or Coach
A teacher should record important predictions before the next performance and then examine not only whether the prediction was right, but also what support, challenge, feedback and opportunities were provided after the prediction. That makes professional judgement more calibratable.
Student
The student should not be treated as the passive object of someone else’s forecast. A prediction is provisional. New performances under appropriate challenge can update the model, and students should have opportunities to produce evidence that contradicts old expectations.

- Specify the target. Predict a defined task or performance, not a vague judgement such as “weak student.”
- State the evidence basis. What observations justify the prediction?
- Record the conditions that follow. Challenge level, scaffolding, feedback, opportunity to respond and grouping decisions matter.
- Compare prediction with outcome. Was the direction right? How large was the discrepancy?
- Ask whether the prediction altered the path. Did instructional decisions change because of the expectation?
- Seek disconfirming evidence. Give the learner a fair opportunity to show performance under conditions not locked to the old judgement.
- Update cautiously. Do not convert one correct forecast into permanent certainty about the learner.
Worked Example: The Student Who Is “Not Ready”
A teacher predicts that a student is not ready for extended-response science questions. For six weeks, the learner receives mostly short-answer work while classmates practise longer explanations. At the next assessment, the learner performs poorly on extended responses.
The result is real evidence. But the inference “the teacher was right all along” is incomplete because the instructional exposure differed after the prediction. A fair recalibration requires a new cycle in which the learner has access to appropriate teaching and practice before another independent extended-response performance.
That later result can tell us more about the learner than a closed loop in which expectation changes opportunity and opportunity helps confirm expectation.
A Prediction Can Be Accurate Without Being Neutral
This is the subtle point. Teacher expectations often correlate with later achievement because teachers possess useful information. Educational research also shows that inaccurate expectations can sometimes influence later outcomes. The responsible conclusion is not “teacher expectations are destiny” and not “expectations do not matter.” It is that prediction quality and expectancy effects must be separated as far as the evidence allows.

A 2020 study in Learning and Instruction, Self-fulfilling prophecies in the classroom: Teacher expectations, teacher feedback and student achievement, followed 1,026 first-grade students. Teacher expectations were partly inaccurate, and inaccurate expectations predicted later achievement after accounting for prior achievement, cognitive abilities, motivation and background characteristics.
A review and meta-analysis of 19 teacher-expectation interventions, The effects of teacher expectation interventions on teachers’ expectations and student achievement, examined whether expectations and their consequences can be changed through interventions targeting teacher behaviour, awareness or underlying beliefs.
The classic review by Jussim and Harber, Teacher expectations and self-fulfilling prophecies: knowns and unknowns, resolved and unresolved controversies, is important because it bounds the claim: self-fulfilling effects do occur, but are typically small, and teacher expectations often predict outcomes because they are partly accurate.
